Stop loss

A stop loss is a resting order that closes a position once it has lost a set amount.

It is the only part of a trade whose size you decide in advance, and it is what makes a loss a known number rather than an open question.

In a fast market it closes at the first available price, which can be past your level. Some brokers sell a separate kind of stop that always closes at your exact level, for a fee.
